Century Memorial

The life interest of Lockwood de Forest was divided between landscape painting and wood-carving; he is best known for the second. Asiatic artistry of the kind had for him a particular fascination; his exhibits, notably of Indian wood-work, excited world-wide discussion. Half a century ago, he took up his interesting task of establishing in India workshops for the revival of the native wood-carving art, and his achievements as student and collector won formal recognition from the world’s greatest international expositions of the period.
