Century Memorial
Few faces were better known during many years at the Century’s dinner-table and evening groups than that of Silas Brown Brownell, who in his eighty-eighth year preserved to the full that instinct of companionship and that interest in passing events which go to make up the true Club spirit. Having served with his regiment in the Civil War during his younger days, he added to the duties of sixty-five years of consecutive law practice in New York City the responsibilities of chairmanship in the board of Princeton Theological Seminary, and of secretaryship to the New York Bar Association. His presence in the Club brought with it the atmosphere not only of personal kindness and loyalty, but of public spirit and of that work for the general good in which so much of his life was unostentatiously passed.
