Henry Leavitt Smith was one of the incorporators of the firm of Charles Scribner’s Sons, of which he was for many years an active director; a man of marked business capacity, he managed for many years the foreign connections of the firm and its retail book department in New York. His strong religious tendencies took the active form of Presidency of the Bible Society and Secretary of the New York City mission, and he was always one of those constant and helpful worshippers in his own church through whose unostentatious service the work of religion in a great city community was carried on.
