Century Memorial

John Sinclair had been for fifteen years an associate of ours. Though born in Belfast his aspirations were American from the outset and in early manhood he became a New Yorker. For nearly half a century, to the last, he cherished that quality. Rising speedily to eminence in commerce, in philanthropy, and in the church, the community bestowed on him in full measure its confidence and respect. He was a director of four great financial companies, an officer of six charitable and religious associations, a member of four clubs, and a supporter, by gift and subscription, of all the foremost scientific and aesthetic organizations for the education of our citizens. Among us he came and went with frequent regularity and in cheerful contentment, finding full measure of stimulus and refreshment in the conversation of his many friends. He was a man of sterling character, pious without cant, brave in the battle with evil, strong and hearty in the upbuilding of this beloved town.
