Newton Melman Shaffer has been described as the first practitioner in America to qualify distinctively as orthopedic surgeon. He was for nearly sixty years a thorough and enlightened student of his branch of surgery, to whose advancement in practical mastery of the problems of the crippled he was a notable contributor.
