Century Memorial

David Stebbins Egleston was another of the mature and tried members of The Century with whom the authors and artists of its list found hearty appreciation. He was seventy-eight at death [sic: seventy-seven] and had been among us for twenty-nine years [sic: thirty]. He was a master in his business, a liberal supporter of his church and its charities, a trusted and faithful director of important financial institutions, but withal a citizen of the intellectual and artistic world. He lived without bustle, solid and true as the steel in which he dealt, and found the renewal of his powers as an amateur of letters and the fine arts. His many friends in this society found him a delightful and stimulating companion.
