He ostensibly resigned sometime before 1851 and was reinstated in February 1857 with a new proposer, John A. Gourlie. Brother of Daniel S. Appleton, George S. Appleton, Samuel F. Appleton, and William H. Appleton; father of Daniel Appleton and Edward D. Appleton; uncle of D. Sidney Appleton and William W. Appleton.
