Century Memorial

One of the seven incorporators in 1857 of the Century Association was William H. Appleton, for more than sixty years head of the book-publishing house of Appleton. Edward Dale Appleton was his nephew. After graduation from Trinity College, Hartford, with the class of ’80, Edward joined the family concern and became vice-president in charge of manufacture. Among the Appleton best sellers of those days were the works of Darwin, Huxley, and Spencer. Later, Edward Appleton joined forces with his brother in the Robert Appleton Company which published the original edition of the Catholic Encyclopedia. Although somewhat handicapped of late years by deafness, Edward Appleton—tall, courteous, undaunted—was an ardent Centurion throughout the nearly five decades of his membership.
