In the American metal trade, Edward A. Caswell was known during more than forty years as a broker of judgment and a statistician of high distinction. His commercial achievements were, however, only part of his interest in life. He spent in Europe the half-dozen years after his graduation from Yale in 1866, serving during part of that time as correspondent for newspapers in this country. His gentle nature and fine sense of the artistic brought him many friends, and the scope of his friendships was almost worldwide. At one time he was the musical critic of the New York Sun, to which work he brought both knowledge and taste. He was the organizer of the intercollegiate chess tournaments; which until very lately he managed, giving his personal attention to every contest.
