Century Memorial
William Gordon Verplanck belonged to the New York family of that name, whose beginnings date back to the older Dutch colonial days and which had been associated during nearly two centuries with the famous Verplanck mansion at Beacon, within whose walls the Society of the Cincinnati was first organized. Verplanck himself practiced law in New York City during nearly half a century, but never practiced very actively. His special avocation was the history of the Hudson Valley in which his family had lived; his own published reminiscences touched on such institutions of another day as the early pilots of the Hudson River. Quiet and reserved in manner, he was nevertheless most appreciative of good talk, and contributed his share to the Century’s casual conversation of an afternoon.
