Colonel Robert Means Thompson passed in his earlier career through a variety of experiences. Officer in the United States Navy, practicing lawyer and member of the Boston Common Council, managing director of metal-producing companies, his interest in life nevertheless was greatest after his retirement from active participation in affairs. He became president of the Navy League; promoter of athletics for the naval academy, in which he offered the “Thompson cup” for the army and navy football game. Perhaps nearest of all to his heart in these latter-day achievements was his arousing of American interest in the Olympic games.
