Century Memorial
John Sloane, a member of the well-known house of W. & J. Sloane, founded by his father and uncle, was a native of Scotland, and came to the United States in early childhood with his parents. His business talents and his high character won for him a prominent place in the world of affairs, and his genial disposition, an equally prominent place in the many social organizations with which he was connected. He was an earnest member of the Brick Presbyterian Church, and a trustee of the Presbyterian Hospital. He took a keen and intelligent interest in public affairs, was an enthusiastic Republican in national politics, and in this city was active in the noted Committee of Seventy, and in other organizations working for the betterment of municipal conditions.
