Century Memorial
Edward Schell was an old New York merchant; and at the time of his death was President of the Manhattan Savings Institution. He came of old Dutch stock, and the fine qualities of that strain of blood were conspicuous in him. He was endowed with strong sense, great business sagacity, tenacity of purpose and high principles. Kindness of heart illuminated his whole character, and made him the most genial and companionable of men. He was a devoted Christian; earnest in the work of the church; and his unostentatious, but constant and liberal gifts for its support, and in aid of its charities, were evidences of his generous nature, which all who knew him fully appreciated.
