Century Memorial

Charles Edward Rushmore’s legal practice in New York covered half a century. He conducted much important banking litigation of the period and, had he chosen to accept the place, might have been one of our appellate judges. Another distinction was conferred on him, however, such as few of his fellow-countrymen have achieved. Among his early legal activities was the conducting of cases for the Black Hill miners, who, as a whole-hearted token of their appreciation for his services, named a mountain after him. The tribute was not less notable from the fact that they selected the peak which Gutzon Borglum, many decades later, was called upon to convert into a national monument.
