Courtlandt Dixon Moss was one of the veterans of the Club, having been a member, at the time of his death, forty years, a period corresponding almost exactly with his business life in this city, whither he came from his birthplace, Westerly, R. I., about 1860. He became connected in 1872, as a partner, with the house of Woodward, Lawrence, & Co., wholesale dry-goods merchants, which afterwards became Lawrence, Taylor, & Co., and Moss, Taylor, & Co., successively. Mr. Moss’s business reputation and his social connections were of the best, and he was a fortunate representative of the business men, “amateurs of letters and the fine arts,” who contribute substantially to the enjoyableness of The Century. Among his business associates he was regarded as belonging to, and perpetuating, “the highest school of mercantile honor and education.”
