Century Memorial

Dr. Stuyvesant Fish Morris was another of the almost legendary Civil War veterans; men whose service in the ranks is nowadays a vague and remote tradition to the generation that has grown up since the war in Europe. We sometimes forget that the War of Secession was almost exactly as far behind us when Marwitz crossed the Belgian frontier in 1914 as was the War of 1812 when Beauregard fired on Sumter. Dr. Morris left his studies at Columbia to go to the front with the Seventh Regiment in 1864, completing his college course and his medical and surgical education after his military service. He was a well-known figure in his profession at New York during the half-century which followed, and was a notably active promoter of the interests of the Academy of Medicine.
