John Holme Maghee was equally interested in science and in art. Graduated from the School of Mines, he took part in two notable geological exploring expeditions headed by the late Professor Newberry. On the other side of things, he was a discriminating collector of paintings and Chinese porcelain and had collected a notable number of highly-priced etchings, among them some of Whistler’s more valuable impressions. He was an enthusiastic tooler of leather book covers and, until his health began to fail him, was a regular attendant at all our best symphony concerts.
