Joseph Wilkins Howe had been a member of The Century for fifteen years when he died at the age of seventy-eight [sic: seventy-seven]. A graduate of Dartmouth and a lawyer by profession, he was successful in many walks of life. His ancestry was of the very earliest New England stock, and his interests were almost co-extensive with the world of commerce, reaching to the farther orient. Of broad sympathy, artistic temperament, and genial personality, he led a life full and rich in its attachments and duties.
