Century Memorial

George Lewis Heins was born in Philadelphia forty-seven years ago, was educated in the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, selected New York as the centre of his activities, and became one of our number fourteen years since. In 1898 he was appointed supervising architect of this State, a trying but important post, the perplexing duties of which were among his most absorbing cares. A patient and painstaking student of the noblest ecclesiastical architecture, he found renown in his chosen field and his name is indissolubly linked with the noble cathedral which is rising to the height of its majesty on the most conspicuous site in the home of our largest urban population. His was a soaring spirit and his important tasks made heavy drafts on his vital forces, for his life went into his work. He belonged by temperament and social gifts to the society of these rooms, and here he found congenial comrades who liked him well.
