Emil Carlsen was an adopted son of America. He seemed to have planned a career as architect in his native Denmark, but his coming to the United States at the age of nineteen turned all his interests to painting. His landscapes and marines are among the most pleasing works of painters of our day. Medals of honor were conferred upon his work on a dozen notable occasions, and his pictures now hang in most of the great American galleries.
