Century Memorial
George Zabriskie was a lawyer of the old-fashioned type, who loved the law for its own sake and for the sake of the history out of which it had come. He belonged to a school which has largely, if not wholly, disappeared in the present-day predominance of purely business practice. If we have gained something through this absorption of the legal mind in practical efficiency, we have also lost the atmosphere of distinction and scholarship that used to surround the cultured lawyers of an older generation. Zabriskie himself was deeply interested and deeply versed in the scholarship of the law. He was probably more familiar with ecclesiastical law and history than any other member of our bar. He could discuss with full knowledge of fact and precedent the litigation over property owned in this country by the pre-war Russian hierarchy, or in regard to disposition of Church property in our own newly-acquired Spanish possessions.
