To J. Davenport Wheeler, one of the veterans of the Civil War, that war was a shadow on his life. Captured in 1863 on a far Southern battlefield, he was immured for the next two years in a Southern military prison, whence he emerged with health and spirit broken. It was his cruel lot to learn from a newly-arrived fellow-prisoner the report—correct as it happened, but for Wheeler in his prison neither confirmed nor confirmable—that his favorite brother had fallen in action. All this experience of half a century ago colored his later life, which was quietly spent in business pursuits at New Haven.
