Archibald Ashley Welch was one of the old-time life insurance executives. He was appropriately born and installed in business life at Hartford, long the headquarters of that industry; indeed, his family’s affiliations with New England had been historically so intimate that Welch himself was fond of citing the direct ancestor who had served in the ranks during King Philip’s war. Welch was a master of the science of life insurance; he had been educated from youth in actuarial pursuits, from the sound principles of which he never swerved. He was in fact one of the life company officers who were consulted by Mr. Hughes, when conducting in 1905 the investigation into the abuses which in New York State had become engrafted on life insurance practices.
