Henry Stephens Washington was one of the country’s outstanding geologists. On some of the more obscure problems of that interesting science—the chemical composition of rocks and minerals, for instance,—he stood at the head in his field of investigation. His reputation was world-wide; he was a distinguished member of scientific bodies in half a dozen countries and carried the decorations of their governments.
