H. Montague Vickers

Henry Montague Vickers, known to his friends as Harry Vickers, came from an old English family residing in Ireland, was graduated from the English Military Engineering School at Sandhurst and was an officer in the Royal Engineers. Resigning his commission, he came to America and, after some years of engineering work, became a business man and bond broker of Wall Street. Vickers was a perfect type of the big, blond, blue-eyed Englishman. He was a conservative of the fine sort, a persistent reader and sincere in convictions which stayed with him to the end. He formed intimate friendships in the Century, particularly in the billiard room, which he frequented a great deal. He was the type that could always be counted upon in time of need, and his friends were most warmly devoted to him. Like other Englishmen of his class, he was fond of sports in a rational way and, again like such men, he knew all about the best wines, the best tobaccos, the best pipes and everything of that sort which goes with the English gentleman. He was helpful to many individuals who were struggling along in this world of ours, and patiently devoted time and attention to helping them out of their little difficulties.
