William A. Valentine was one of those medical practitioners whose patients remember them for their universal kindness quite as much as for their professional skill, but his interests and sympathies stretched far beyond his profession. He was one of the noted rifle-shots of the Seventh Regiment, in which he enlisted nearly half a century ago and in which he served as assistant surgeon under his fellow-Centurion Dr. Daniel Stimson. During many years, Dr. Valentine and another well-known Centurion, Colonel Daniel Appleton, spent their vacations together in hunting big game in the Northwest.
