The same was true of Jules Turcas, a rare, romantic spirit, who in his later years was pleased to live and paint in our quiet old Connecticut village of Lyme. Although reared in Cuba, he was a Yankee with the best of us, and insistently American in the intentions of his art. He had known life in western frontier towns, in one of which he is said when young so effectively to have abolished a bully that the admiring citizens elected him sheriff. But Turcas was a quiet, friendly soul, happy in his social and domestic life. His art was simple and sincere, and may outlast the changing fortunes of those whose work has won a readier acclaim.
