Theodore Thomas belonged to that group of Centurions who seemed to be an essential part of the Club. To miss him from his invariable place at the upper left-hand dinner-table, where he would always sit with Harney, Lippincott, Alexander [ambiguous reference], and Dr. Carr, gives even now a sense of incompleteness, and that is not because Thomas was a ready talker. He was, on the contrary, always one of the listeners; when he joined the conversation, it was apt to be with brief and matter-of-fact comment on the subject. But this well-known quality only emphasized the part played by personality pure and simple in making the good club-man; for every one was fond of Thomas, and took pleasure in exchanging impressions with him. He was a tireless worker for the Club, and had served many years on its committees.
