William Rush Taggart was not only shrewd in the wisdom of the world but well-poised in character, large-hearted, serene of temperament. Most of those who encountered him in his notable career as corporation lawyer saw only the insight, the quick decision, the indomitable resolution to win his client’s case. The other side of him was not often unfolded until he had retired at the end of the day to his country home, overlooking Long Island Sound. Once there, the cares and preoccupations of business instantly disappeared, giving way to that genial conversation and penetrating judgment on the larger things of life which made him what he really was.
