It was in 1887 that Thomas Shepard Southworth received his medical doctorate at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Thereafter he practiced pediatrics in New York City for thirty-four years and contributed more than fifty papers to the literature of his specialty. He held important posts in the New York Academy of Medicine, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of the State of New York, the Medical Association of the Greater City of New York, and the American Pediatrics Society. He was consulting physician at the New York Nursery and Child’s Hospital and the New York Children’s Hospital. “A stalwart New Englander, well traveled, with a deep interest in music and art,” is a fellow Centurion’s description of his character and non-professional activities.
