We all knew Augustine Smith, whose attendance here was as regular as the workings of an astronomical clock. He took the deepest interest in the affairs of the Club, and was conversant with all the details of its management. Possessed of an ample fortune, acquired in his active business life in the city, he adorned his home with books and works of art, and spent his leisure hours in the society of a large circle of friends. He found his chief pleasure in his membership in The Century, with all which that implies.
