Century Memorial
William Sloane was of the best type of New York City business men. Upright in character, quiet in manner yet clear and decided in business judgment, ready to give his time and energy unsparingly to work for the public welfare but shunning notoriety or applause, his career recalls that of the old-time London merchants in the days when even the government had to reckon with the City merchants. It was under his auspices as chairman that the forty to fifty million dollars fund of the Young Men’s Christian Association was raised and distributed for the organization’s war work at the front.
