Lawrence Eugene Sexton was one of the men frequently met with in New York, whose ancestry was of colonial New England, whose childhood was spent in the West, but whose college training was again of New England, with New York as the scene of his life work. Sexton’s experience was broadened, even before his college days, by residence of some years in Europe, where he is said to have painted for a time at Julian’s Studio in Paris. But his law practice, his work for the various city institutions, and his participation in the political activities of an independent citizen made up his life.

He took his place in the ranks of the working citizen organizations as soon as he left college, and was for years an active force in the Reform Club, where he served as member of the Tariff Reform Committee and Chairman of the Committee on Sound Currency. Along with these activities, Sexton was an explorer with endurance and courage, a hunter of big game, and an athlete whose traditions were recognized during many years by his selection as one of the judges of the intercollegiate rowing contests at New London.
