The wide scope of intellectual avocations which varied the professional career of Samuel Rossiter Betts was shown by the organizations in which he was an active member, and which included the Geographical Society, the Museum of Natural History, the Zoological society, the Botanical Garden and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His legal practice of nearly half a century in this city was distinguished; the Federal government had made special use of his services.
