Edward Lasell Partridge was for half a century an active and skilful medical practitioner; but New York will especially remember him for his energetic work in preserving and developing the scenic surroundings of Manhattan Island. He was a pioneer in the movement to create the Palisades Interstate Park, on whose board he long served as commissioner; he was an active promoter of the larger development of the Hudson Highlands, and at the same time a manager of the New York Tree Planting Association, of the Grant Monument Association and of the American Scenic and Historic Preservation society. Dr. Partridge’s interest in the country’s history, indeed, was as deep as his interest in its scenic beauties or in his own profession Perhaps he will be especially remembered for his early conception of the Storm King Highway, and for his successful campaign in excluding roadside signboards from the surrounding picture, whose extraordinary beauty New Yorkers are only beginning to comprehend.
