A Westerner by birth, Dr. James Ewing Mears had practiced in Philadelphia from the time of his graduation in medicine in 1865 until his retirement from active work, twenty years ago. Dr. Mears devoted much of his time to charitable work and gave liberally of his personal means for free medical and surgical instruction. His book on The Problem of Race Betterment attracted considerable discussion in medical circles.
