Century Memorial
John Clarkson Jay was great-grandson of Washington’s Chief Justice; he was one of the young New Yorkers who responded to Lincoln’s first call for volunteers in the Civil War. For his medical work he had prepared himself by studies at Vienna and Prague, was associated in this city with the New York Hospital and was one of the founders of the Free Dispensary for Children.
