Rudolph Hering was one of the best products of the combination of American birth, primary education, and opportunities, with a foreign parentage, professional education, and life-long study of foreign, no less than American professional literature and achievement. In this way he developed a high reputation in his chosen branch of sanitary engineering on both sides of the Atlantic. A master of the three essential languages, English, French and German, he illustrated in a high degree the uses that such a knowledge may render to a professional life.
