Robert Williams Gibson came to this country from his native England under interesting circumstances. He had won the Soane medallion as an architectural student at London, and was therefore recommended to a New York architect of established repute who had asked for an assistant in certain lines of work better known in England than America. His first task was the Albany Cathedral, in which he achieved at once high rank in his profession. The New York Clearing House, the Greenwich Savings Bank and the Botanical Museum were among his later works. His professional eminence and his good Americanism were recognized by his election twice to the Presidency of the Architectural League.
