Century Memorial

Born in 1849, the oldest in years on this roll, William Bailey Faxon was in his prime an active and influential member of the Club. He was a daily visitor of great popularity among a wide circle of friends. He was one of a group who loved the Club devotedly and guarded its affairs zealously. His tall, slightly stooped figure, with heavy beard and mustaches, was a familiar sight to the older members. The billiard room saw much of him; he had his private cue and played billiards regularly. His career as a painter dated from long ago. It was in the ’70’s that he studied in Paris and returned to paint portraits and landscapes. He served as president of the American Fine Arts Society from 1906 to 1921. In the last World War he was active in forming the Association to Aid Orphans of French Artists.
