Richard Sheldon Ely was one of those quiet gentlemen who impress themselves upon their friends by their gentleness and dignity rather than by more showy qualities.
He had long been in business here, and for a time resided in England. He had a taste for books and travel, was happy in his domestic life, gave liberally to charities, was universally esteemed by a large circle of friends; and the large interests committed to his charge were faithfully and devotedly administered by him.
