Ellsworth Eliot, Jr. [Born] 1864. Surgeon.
Great teacher at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, where for twenty-three years he conducted a rugged and famous seminar in anatomy and surgery known as “Eliot’s Quiz.” No surgeon of his generation had more grateful, affectionate, and loyal admirers among former pupils than he. To all of them he was “the old man,” a name in this case conveying a rare combination of dread and affection. He was a bridge expert who refereed many championship matches, a respected historian of phases of the Civil War, an ardent ornithologist, professionally a former president of the American Surgical Association and of the New York Surgical Society. Above all he was a devoted Centurion, who served the Association well through the long years of his membership. He was especially missed at the New Year’s Eve celebration where his rich, resonant voice, for many years had led in the singing of the old songs.
