He ostensibly resigned sometime between 1860 and 1864 and was reinstated in June 1866 with a new set of proposers, Charles A. Joy and Thomas McElrath.

Century Memorial

Charles Burrall Hoffman, Benjamin L. Swan, Jr., James C. Derby, and Samuel McLean, the last of whom was suddenly taken from us last Tuesday, were men of high character in the business world, where they were well known and prominent. The interests committed to their charge were served faithfully, and with marked integrity, and they have left behind them unsullied reputations.
