American landscape painting suffered a loss from the death of Walter Clark, once a student under George Inness. Although trained as a sculptor, landscape painting held his final endeavor, and in that field he attained distinction by his sensitive and sympathetic work. He was a National Academician, and a member of many artist societies. Clark was somewhat favored by fortune, a circumstance which left him free to direct his work as he saw fit, and paint slowly.
