Century Memorial
John Adams Church, a younger brother of Col. William C. Church, who survived him but a few months, was the first graduate of the School of Mines of what is now Columbia University. Having studied in Europe, he undertook the duties of a professor at Columbia, while at the same time editing the Engineering & Mining Journal. He was a member of the United States Geographical and Geological Survey, and the examiner of the Comstock Lode, and then a professor in the Ohio State University. He was afterwards engaged by Li Hung Chang, and spent four years opening the silver mines in Mongolia and introducing there American methods and machinery.
