During more than twenty years, George Folger Canfield had conducted as its president the affairs of the State Charities Aid Association. This public service followed nearly four decades in the professorship of law at Columbia and eleven years of private legal practice. In his work for charity he succeeded Joseph H. Choate; each of these fellow-Centurions gave the best of himself to this kindly public duty. His legal knowledge, equally with his executive capacity, made him a notable citizen of his period.
