Century Memorial

James Manning Bruce, a graduate of Columbia in 1866 and afterward student at Paris, Florence and Oxford, was characterized by scholarship, genial manners, and devotion to the needs of the poor. For thirty years he was associated with the late Dr. Edward Judson in the conduct of the Judson Memorial Church in Washington Square. In particular, Dr. Bruce gave himself unstintedly to helpful work with the foreigners living near the church. He was a man of old-school manners, cultured, refined, and of a rare Christian spirit, who loved to serve his fellowmen quietly and who, while attracting little attention to himself, was greatly beloved by those who enjoyed his intimate friendship.
