Welcome T. Alexander, a typical old-school family physician, Scotch-Irish by descent, had been an active practitioner in New York during nearly half a century. His method embodied the old medical dictum that he who is not a good despot is not a good doctor. He was unsparing of himself, and exacted strict obedience from his patients. But he was none the less kindly and courteous both by instinct and inheritance, winning the affection of his patients as he won their confidence.
