Century Memorial

Jacob D. Vermilye was one of the best-known and most highly-esteemed business men of the city.

He was born in John Street, near Broadway. At an early age [he] entered a bank and remained a banker all his life, and a type of the ideal one.

Clear headed, far sighted, broad minded, patriotic and of the highest personal character, he occupied a leading position in banking circles, and gave a large part of his time since 1872 to work on the Board of Education. Few men took a greater interest in its work or more thoroughly understood the needs of the public schools than he. His life ended with the expiration of his term of office on New Year’s Day, and it was honorably and well spent.
