Sir William Lane Booker, C.M.G., was elected to The Century in 1885, two years after his promotion to be British Consul-General at New York (January 1, 1883). He was born in 1824, and after five years’ employment in the British Consulate at San Francisco he was appointed Consul there in 1857. In 1886 he was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and was knighted March 12, 1894. On July 12 of the same year he retired on a pension, after more than twoscore years of faithful and honorable service.
